THE EVOLUTION OF HR: THEN AND NOW

Posted on 29th SEP 2017 in HR Tech, Human Resources by QuickHR with 0 Comments

Human resource (HR) has come a long way. It was better known as personal administration in the 1920s, a process to facilitate the process of hiring, evaluating, training and compensating employees. Today, technology’s paradigm has completely reshaped HR.

Traditional HR required the staffs to find, screen, recruit and train job applicants as well as administer employee-benefit programs. However, the late 20th century changed this with the advent of the Internet and its rapid growth moved the world into a 24/7 society.

Rise of People Operations

More companies have rebranded their HR departments to ‘People Teams’ or ‘People Operations’, a common terminology in the tech world. Google took the lead in 2006 by transforming their HR department into People Operations.

Other players in the market such as Microsoft, Airbnb and Buzzfeed also followed suit, reflecting the importance of these three points:

  1. Employees are not merely resources; they are a company’s asset
  2. People Operations (aka HR) will be the catalyst to move businesses forward
  3. Data-driven promotes transparency and boosts efficiency

The world is growing at record speed. If companies intend to move forward, they need to do so with the correct team and make sure that everyone is on the same page. This is where a ‘bird’s eye view’ is essential and this can be done with the necessary data on hand.

A Data-Centric

When you build a people team, you are not just recruiting people but you are acquiring and managing talent, creating the ultimate employee experience and cultivating your work culture. So how can you ensure that you are on the right track?

This is where data comes into place. Data allows employers to be more analytical and strategic when it comes to finding their ideal candidate. Predictive analytics can also provide a forecast of trends in the industry and provide insights into employee benefits, talent management and promotions.

For example, predictive analytics can be used to measure the effectiveness of employee training programmes and find out which employees are more likely on track to hit their goals and more.

HR Tech – The game changer

Technology is only here to make our lives better. Today, many HR processes have been automated with the help of HR solutions. These HR software have helped to reduce the workflow of HR professionals and allowed them to focus on what’s essential – their people.
