Gig Workers in Singapore to Get Better Job Protections Starting in 2024

MOM accepted recommendations, from the Tripartite Workgroup on Representation for Platform Workers, that will pave the way to increase protection and representation for gig employees under a new legislative framework, which will be implemented from the second half of 2024.

Gig employees in Singapore, such as deliverymen, cabbies and ride-hailing drivers can soon negotiate for better working conditions as a group, through representative bodies that are legally empowered and act almost like trade unions.

MOM Identifies Common Reasons for Late CPF Payments

In a recent report from MOM, an average of about 2,800 employers per month failed to make the correct amount of Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions promptly in the last three years.

It is also said that the common reasons for late CPF payments include administrative lapses such as missed deadlines, insufficient funds for bank deduction and cash flow issues.

Some employers may also have an incorrect understanding of their obligations under the CPF scheme.

New Hires in Singapore Still Open for New Opportunities

Based on a recent survey, nine in 10 new hires in Singapore have admitted that they remain open to new opportunities since the pandemic began.

According to the survey, employees are more likely to start a job search when they think the economic environment is worsening.

The report highlighted the need for a compelling employee value proposition that offers more than just financial rewards and flexible work arrangements.

New Initiatives for Enhanced Protection against Workplace Discrimination

The Tripartite Committee on Workplace Fairness has proposed a new legislation that focuses on mediation rather than litigation for dispute resolution, and that the legislation should complement the existing TGFEP.

MOM also shared that the proposed legislation would aim to build on existing efforts to enhance workplace fairness through a range of education and enforcement efforts.

Workers Demand Time Off to Learn New Skills Amid Digitalisation

A recent survey found that both full- and part-time employees across Singapore want initiatives that will help them grow, as they embrace the era of digitalisation.

These initiatives include giving time off work to upgrade or upskill, sending them off for external training, and providing sponsored scholarships.

Majority of New Jobseekers Prefer Hybrid Work Arrangements

A new research from CEMS, the Global Alliance in Management Education, found that young employees who favoured flexible working arrangements believed that hybrid work gave them the ability to effectively split time between home and office, improve wellbeing, and reduce costs.

It is also said that the employees were drawn to the hybrid work arrangement because it allowed them to achieve long-term career sustainability by balancing work and life demands, while still being able to network with colleagues.
