From major changes affecting working parents in Singapore to shifting expectations around pay, hiring, work-life boundaries and AI skills, this month has given HR leaders plenty to keep up with.
Here are the latest developments, key figures and workforce trends shaping the conversation in today’s workplaces.
Singapore's National Day Rally (NDR) 2026 brought major changes for families and working parents, including 8 days of childcare leave for one child, 10 days for two and 12 days for three or more children aged 12 and below.
Families will also receive expanded financial and housing support, with the BTO income ceiling rising from S$14,000 to S$16,000 for families, alongside additional ballot chances for eligible first-time families with children.
✅ Smart HR Tip: Make sure to review leave management policies, workforce coverage and how managers support employees balancing work and caregiving.
Malaysia's current minimum wage is RM1,700, but concerns are growing for employees earning just above the threshold, such as RM1,800 or RM1,900, who may see little or no corresponding wage growth.
The issue is particularly striking for fresh graduates, with reported starting salaries now commonly between RM2,000 and RM2,500, compared with around RM3,500 two decades ago.
✅ Smart HR Tip: Review whether your pay structure creates clear progression beyond entry-level wages. Benchmark roles regularly and link salary growth to skills, responsibilities and performance, not just minimum wage adjustments.
Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is urging employers to notify interviewed candidates of hiring outcomes within a reasonable timeframe, reinforcing the importance of communication throughout the recruitment process.
As of May 2026, 6,620 entities, including government agencies, had adopted the Tripartite Standard on Recruitment Practices, which encourages unsuccessful candidates to be informed of interview outcomes.

✅ Smart HR Tip: Set clear ownership and timelines for candidate updates at every hiring stage. Automate status notifications where possible, and make sure every interviewed candidate receives a clear outcome.
The share of full-time resident employees whose employers have policies governing after-hours communication rose from 48% in 2022 to 55% in 2025, according to MOM.
These policies can include not expecting responses to non-urgent messages until the next working day or offering time-off-in-lieu for after-hours work.
✅ Smart HR Tip: Review how after-hours communication actually works in your organisation. Set clear expectations for response times, urgent requests and manager behaviour, then make sure teams understand and apply them consistently.
A new global survey found that remuneration and benefits remain the biggest driver of job moves at 47%, while 36% now cite job security as a major factor which is a significant rise from last year.
Meanwhile, the median time to hire stands at 70 days, highlighting why a faster and more transparent recruitment process can be a competitive advantage.
✅ Smart HR Tip: Review your employee value proposition as a whole. Benchmark pay alongside benefits, flexibility and career development, then identify where your hiring or retention experience may be falling behind employee expectations.
Many organisations are still training employees on AI basics such as prompting and chatbot use, while the next phase of work is increasingly moving towards AI agents and more complex human-AI collaboration.
Research cited another projection that suggests 39% of workers' core skills could change by 2030 and 59 out of every 100 workers may need reskilling or upskilling.
